As the school year winds down, I am getting very excited. It's not just that summer is coming. It's that this summer, in particular, is going to be an adventure. On June 10, I am leaving for Rome, where I'll spend six weeks taking a class on the history and archaeology of the Eternal City. (Class starts June 13.) Even better, I'll be joining grad students and other Latin teachers as part of the American Academy in Rome's Classical Summer School. That means six weeks of reading Latin, talking about how to teach Latin, and probably speaking Latin, all while getting a lot of insight into the city of Rome itself.
What has surprised me the most about preparing for the trip is that I am embarrassingly excited about having homework. HOMEWORK! I have a ton of reading to do before I go, and I've also just found out that our Latin study group will be working through Suetonius's account of the life of Nero. My students have been horrified by my delight in having assigned readings to do. But after a few years of teaching, I know how nice it is to kick back and enjoy being back on the other side of the desk.
If you're interested in my Roman adventure this summer, please check the blog regularly for updates (or click through to new posts on Facebook). I'll be posting travel stories and nerdy Latin teacher stuff all summer long. You can also follow me on Instagram @dr.liz for regular photo updates.
